Question
GTM engineering appeared because outbound at volume stopped working, GTM tools became properly programmable, and language models made unstructured data usable. Precision replaced volume, and precision is an engineering problem.
Reply rates on untargeted outbound fell far enough that sending more stopped being a strategy. The response was to send less, to better targets, with something specific to say.
Doing that at any scale is a data problem before it is a writing problem.
Real APIs, webhooks, and platforms designed to be wired together rather than used alone. A person who can write a small amount of code can now build a motion that previously needed a vendor and a project.
A great deal of useful signal lives in text: job posts, filings, transcripts, websites. It used to be unusable at scale. Now it is a prompt.
That single change is most of why the role exists.
More precise pipeline is still pipeline, and somebody still has to work out which of it is real. The bottleneck moved from creating opportunity to assessing it.
That is where deal scoring earns its place, and why the useful version reaches the rep rather than sitting in a dashboard.
Questions
The title may not last. The underlying change will: GTM tools are programmable and unstructured data is usable, so somebody on a revenue team now needs to be able to build.
Usually not as a dedicated hire under about fifty people. What they need is somebody comfortable wiring tools together, which is often the RevOps person already.
It arrives in Slack
Every morning, each rep gets one message naming the deals on their own book that moved overnight, biggest mover first, with the reason beside each number and the deals that have gone quiet underneath.
