Question

What revenue operations actually does.

Revenue operations owns the systems, data and process that sales, marketing and customer success all run on. In practice the job is making the numbers trustworthy and the process repeatable, usually with one person and no authority.

What it owns.

The CRM and the tools around it. The definitions behind every number leadership looks at. The process from lead to renewal, and the handoffs between teams that break it.

In most companies under 500 people that is one person.

What it actually spends time on.

Answering questions about why two reports disagree. Cleaning data somebody else entered. Building a dashboard for a question that will be asked once.

The good version of the job is upstream of all three: making the definitions unambiguous so the reports cannot disagree.

What a team of one should do first.

Pick the three numbers leadership actually uses and make those unimpeachable. Everything else can wait.

Then fix the data problems that break those three: deals open past their close date, unassigned records, and stages used inconsistently.

Where tooling helps and where it does not.

Tooling that requires a mapping or configuration project before it produces anything tends to become the RevOps person second job. Tooling that reads what is already there and gives something back immediately does not.

Questions

What does a revenue operations team do?

Owns the CRM and surrounding systems, the definitions behind the numbers leadership uses, and the process from lead to renewal including the handoffs between teams.

What is the difference between RevOps and sales ops?

Sales ops supports the sales team specifically. RevOps covers sales, marketing and customer success together, which mainly changes who owns the handoffs between them.
